All wood flooring, regardless of width or length, that is one piece of wood from top to bottom is considered solid flooring.
Solid flooring gives you a great opportunity for customization. Your choice of species, stains & finishes all contribute to the personalization of solid floor. Adding borders, medallions, corner treatments, etc., can further customize a solid wood floor.
In most cases, solid flooring is nailed down to exterior grade plywood, & is excellent in most areas of a home on ground level or above. Living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms & greatrooms are excellent for solid wood flooring.
Engineered Flooring
Engineered wood flooring is available in 3 & 5 ply. It is a wood flooring product that consist of layers of wood pressed together, w/ the grains running in different directions.
Engineered wood flooring is perfect for those areas of the house where solid wood flooring may not be suitable, such as basements, kitchens, powder rooms & utility rooms. Engineered flooring is also specifically designed to be put down over concrete. Because the grains run in different directions, it is more dimensionally stable than solid wood. This means that it will expand & contract less than solid wood during fluctuations in humidity & temperature. Many different species & colors of engineered wood flooring are available, visit our showroom. Adding borders, medallions or corner treatments is a terrific option w/ engineered as well as solid products. Most engineered wood flooring products are finished at the factory & several finish options are available, but it does come as an unfinished product as well.
Engineered floors are designed to go over concrete & they come as unfinished wood in addition to factory finished.
Job-Site or Factory Finished
A job-site finish is one that is applied at the place of installation. There are several different types of finishes available. Most ( but not all ) solid wood flooring products are unfinished & some enegineered products are available unfinished.
Choosing the type of finish to be applied to yur floor on-site gives you the choice of what type of shine you prefer, as well as the effect the color of the product will have on your floor. A wide range of stains are available for use on a floor that will be finished on-site, giving you unlimited possibilities for customizing your floors color. However, sanding & finishing on-site does create dust & noise from the equipment & there is dry time during which you will be unable to use that particular room.
A prefinished floor is one on which the finish is applied at the factory. Most ( but not all ) engineered products are prefinished & some solid products are available prefinished. Several finish options are available in prefinished products, including 7-8 layers of ultraviolet cured urethane. You should consult our office as to which finishes are available on the product of your choice.
Prefinished flooring eliminates the dust & noise factors involved in the job-site finishing process, however, your finish & stain options are somewhat limited but w/ all the variety of products & colors that are available now you should be able to find the perfect floor for you.
